GFYE 0098 – First Year Experience Course
FYE Journal Guidelines*
Fall 2009
For this assignment, you will keep a journal throughout the course of the semester. This journal will comprise and collect several types of writing and coursework:
· Homework assignments, both from within or outside of our textbook
· Assignments and quizzes related to the Assembly Lecture series
· Class notes
· General reflections and diary entries related to your first semester of college enrollment
You will need a one-inch three-ring binder with approximately fifty sheets of loose-leaf paper for this project.
When assigned exercises from our textbook, you may do the work on the textbook page, rip it out along the perforations, and place the page in your FYE Journal, or you may simply transfer the assignment directly onto a loose-leaf page (helpful if you wish to resell the book).
Bring your FYE Journal with you to class at all times. This is especially important since class notes count as entries in the journal.
In addition to homework, notes, and other assignments, you should sit down at least once a week and compose a reflective entry on events, impressions, frustrations, or other ideas or emotions related to your experience as a first-semester college student.
As you enter material into your journal, please place a sequential page number in the upper outside corner of each page. For material imported into the journal, please assign it a sequential entry number, and for entries on loose-leaf, please label and date the entry. As the journal is compiled, then, it will present a numbered sequence of entries and pages that will allow for easy access and assessment. Each new entry should be begun on a new page.
By the semester’s end, your FYE Journal should have a minimum of 40 entries spanning a minimum of 40 pages. The FYE Journal is worth 20% of your final grade.
Due Date: I will collect it and check it four times during the course of the semester, assigning a grade on a 25 point scale at each assessment, totaling 100 points by semester’s end. If you do not have your Journal on a check-in day, you will receive a 0 grade for that quarter. Your FYE Journal is worth 20% of your final grade.
