Introduction to Abnormal Psychology
Disorder Paper
As you should recall from your course syllabus, 10% of your final grade is based on a paper covering the same psychological disorder that you based your class presentation on. The following is a description of my expectation for that paper. Begin the paper by indicating the prevalence of the disorder. Next, the paper should include a description of the psychological disorder. This should be a full description that demonstrates your understanding of how the disorder might be characterized or observed in an individual. There should also be a section of the paper that details the symptoms and diagnostic requirements of the disorder. Include a discussion of the causes of the disorder. I do not want merely a list of the causes but a description of how the factors or events may lead to the display of this disorder. The next section should address the treatment methods utilized for this disorder. Once again this should include a description of these methods and what impact they are expected to have on the causes, cognitions, or behaviors associated with the disorder. Finally, include a discussion of the prognosis for treatment of the disorder (Do people recover from this disorder?).
The paper should be 5 pages (not including reference page), typed, double-spaced, and in a font no larger than 12 or smaller than 11, with one inch margins. Include page numbers at the bottom of the page in the middle. Include at least 4 references that you used to generate the information for the paper. Be sure that you do not plagiarize by copying someone else’s information into your paper. You may summarize but not copy. Indicate from which reference you are taking a quote or summary. If you write about a fact that you read from book, include the author’s name and date of the book; it the information came from a website, include the website information and the date that you accessed the website at the end of the sentence (e.g. Kicklighter, 2001). If you mention a reference in the body of the paper, it should be listed on the reference page. References should be from medical or psychology books or websites. At least two of the four references should be from books. The websites should be related to a university, mental health organization, or other reputable organizations. (Wikipedia is not an acceptable website.) If you have doubts concerning a reference please see me. References should be listed at the end of the paper, on a separate sheet of paper, using the APA style. Go to the following website for information on the APA style: http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/apa.html. The following is an example of the APA style for references.
Author Last Name, First Initial. (YEAR). Title of article or chapter. Book or Journal that the Article Came from in Italics or Underlined (Capilatlized). Publisher of Book: City, State. (or Journal number, pages).
