Course Description: The Gordon Band offers Gordon College students the opportunity to perform music written specifically and solely for band.  It is open to all Gordon students, but required of all instrumental majors.

TEXT: Music provided

MATERIALS: Instrument, pencil

Grading:

Performance: Each concert is 50% of your grade. If there is only one performance in a semester, that will be 100% of your grade.  You must attend all concerts.

Attendance – see below.  You can only lose points for non attendance.

Assessment: non-majors: There is no formal “testing” in the musical ensemble.  You will

be graded on rehearsal and concert attendance.

Assessment: music majors:   You will be tested on your music prior to each concert.  You

are expected to know your music and perform it on a college level.  NOTE: although
there have been times in the past where I have not tested music majors on their band
music, I intend to do so this semester.

Grading Scale:           A         90 to 100

                                    B         80 to 89

                                    C         70 to 79

                                    D         60 to 69

                                    F          Below 60

Attendance:   Attendance is required.  Since we rehearse only once a week – everyone’s attendance is required.  You are allowed one (1) unexcused absence without penalty.  Beginning with the second absence, nine points will be deducted from your final average for each absence.  After 4 absences, you automatically fail.  If you know you are going to be absent, please inform Dr. Boumpani ahead of time AND return with proper documentation (doctor’s note, etc.)

BEING LATE:  The Gordon Band is a joint student-community band. Adult members of our community band often travel 45 minutes to an hour to be here, often after working all day.  They are, with relatively few exceptions, rarely late.  Gordon students should never be late – especially if you live on campus!  Every time you are late 4 points will be deducted from you final grade. Therefore: if you are taking this course for credit, you must be on time.  Being on time means:

Being in your seat, with your instrument out, warmed up and with your music in order. For percussionists this means having ALL of the drums and percussion equipment set up and ready for all the music on the rehearsal list before 6:00 PM.

Walking through the door 1 minute before rehearsal begins is not being on time.  If you have a conflict that will cause you to be late, please see Dr. Boumpani as soon as possible. If you have problems being on time, or you feel you have to make some kind of philosophical or political statement by being late, then please drop band now.  If I believe that you are constantly late for no reason, I will ask you to leave band or have you removed.

Academic Honor Code:

Students are expected to uphold the “Student Code of Conduct” in the Gordon College Catalog.  I expect you to do your own work at all time.

Special Considerations:

This class complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Students with disabilities who need academic accommodations should:

            (1)        Register with and provide documentation to the Office of Disability Services.

(2)        Bring a letter to the instructor from the Office of Disability Services indicating the need for academic accommodations.  This should be done within the first week of class.

EXTRA HELP:  Anyone who would like extra help with their music may see Dr. Boumpani and set up a tutoring session.  I am glad to help anyone who desires to be a better musician.
