Advising Tips For Business Majors

This page is intended to help you to plan for your degree at Gordon College.  The page contains tips and facts that can help to guide your curricular choices as you register during your stay here.

This page is NOT intended to be a substitute for talking to your advisor if you need advice or if you are confused about courses to take.

Area Requirements Tips
A

Required Courses: 6 hours
ENGL 1101 (3-0-3)
ENGL 1102 (3-0-3)
Choose one of the following courses: 3 - 4 hours
MATH 1001 (3-0-3) or MATH 1111 (3-0-3)

MATH 1113(4-0-4)
Hours Applied to Area A ................................................... 9 HOURS*

† MATH 1001 is the recommended course for non-science majors. MATH 1111 or
any higher level MATH course may be substituted. For Business and Information
Systems majors, MATH 1111 or any higher level MATH course is recommended.

Take ENGL 1101 and 1102 in back to back semesters if possible.  It is highly recommended that you do these courses in the first two terms that you are enrolled.  After you complete ENGL 1102, then you should take the Regent's reading and essay exam if you are required to do so.
Business Majors are strongly encouraged to take MATH 1111 (College Algebra).  This course is the prerequisite for MATH 1113 (Precalculus).  Most schools that offer a business degree require business majors to complete at least the Precalculus course before they can graduate and others require Calculus.  To get to that point, you should take College Algebra in Area A.  MATH 1111 is also a good preparation for statistics which you will be required to take as well.
B

Choose a minimum of four credit hours from the following:
Students are encouraged to take a two hour colloquium to
satisfy part of the Area B requirement and may complete Area
B by taking any college-level course numbered above 1000
except for physical education activity courses.

COLQ 2991 Humanities Colloquium (2-0-2)
COLQ 2992 Natural Science and Math Colloquium (2-0-2)
COLQ 2993 Social Science Colloquium (2-0-2)
Hours Applied to Area B ...................................................... 4 HOURS

At this point, any class except 1 hour P.E. courses will count in this area for Business (or any other) majors.  However, the college has courses designed to fit in this area that were created to enhance the education of all students.  These courses have a prefix of COLQ and are called Colloquium courses.  The courses are 2 semester credit hours and can not be used to satisfy any other requirements.  You are free to choose any acceptable course as an area B course.

If you take MATH 1113 (Precalculus) as your Area D elective, one of the hours of that course (it is a 4-semester hour course) will count in this area, leaving you with 3 hours.  So a possibility is that you could take another 3 hour course in Area B, such as an extra business elective.

C Choose one of the following courses: _______________
ENGL 2111, 2112, 2121, 2122, 2131, 2122 or PHIL 2010 or 2020

Choose one of the following courses: _______________
ARTS 1100, 1101, 1102; COMM 1110, 1500; FREN 1001, 1002;
HUMA 1500; MUSC 1100; SPAN 1001, 1002; THEA 1000, 1100

Hours Applied to Area C ...................................................... 6 HOURS

My advice for business majors is to take classes for this area that you might enjoy.  The English literature classes do have a prerequisite of ENGL 1101, but the other classes can be taken at any time.  Remember that there are now 2 lists from which you have to choose Humanities electives.  You have to pick one course from each list.

Hours Applied to Area D for Non-Science Majors.....11 HOURS*

**If a student takes both BIOL 1111K and BIOL 1107K, only one of these will

count toward the Area D science requirement. The other may be used in Area B.

**If a student takes both BIOL 1112K and BIOL 1108K, only one of these will

count toward the Area D science requirement. The other may be used in Area B.

There are a number of science classes with labs that can be taken for credit in Area D.  But the science faculty have certain courses that they have created for majors outside of science and mathematics.  Those courses are the ones listed on the advisement worksheet.  Please note that Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 2210K and 2211K) are courses that are offered regularly for Nursing and Science majors, but these courses will NOT count in Area D for other majors.  Also, a student cannot have credit for both BIOL 1111K and BIOL 1107K or BIOL 1112K and BIOL 1108K.

There is always some confusion as to what you can take in this area and you should know that you CAN take 2 different lab science courses; you do not have to take a sequence.

As indicated in the Area B tips, if you take a 4 hour course in the elective portion of this area (for example, MATH 1113 or Precalculus), you can use the "extra" 4th hour in Area B.

†Constitution and history requirement: The State of Georgia requires that any person

receiving a degree from a state-supported college must demonstrate a knowledge of

the history and Constitution of the United States and of Georgia. The history and

Constitution requirement may be met by successfully completing HIST 2111 or

HIST 2112. Students transferring from out-of-state or private institutions to Gordon

who have had American history must pass a special examination on the history and

Constitution of Georgia.

You can take up to 4 History classes in this area if you choose.  Make sure that you only take 4 classes total and that one of the classes is a Western Civilization class and the other is American History.

ANTH 1102 is a new course in Area E.  The catalog description is as follows:

A survey of general anthropology, the comparative study of humankind as a whole, including its major sub disciplines:  cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and physical anthropology.

ACCT 2101 MUST be taken before ACCT 2102 (it is a prerequisite to the course).  It is very important that you plan you schedule for graduating accordingly.

Neither ECON 2105 nor ECON 2106 have a college-level prerequisite so those classes can be taken at any time in any order.  It is NOT recommended that you take them both at the same time.
