Preliminary work has begun on a faculty/staff parking lot on Georgia Avenue on the west side of the Gordon College campus.
The single-level lot, which will contain about 100 spaces, will take the place of the current faculty/staff lot which faces Spencer Street. That lot will eventually become student parking.
The Georgia Avenue lot -- which is next door to the college's human resources office -- is in the very preliminary stages, according to Richard Vereen, director of facilities for Gordon College.
"We took down the delapidated house that was there and we are doing some grading right now," he said. "We don't anticipate moving ahead until the early spring."
Plans are also in the holding stage for the demolition of Watson Hall which will pave the way for the construction of the Nursing and Allied Health Building in that space.
"We are waiting on the Governor to sign off on the demolition," Vereen said. "Then we will proceed."
Watson Hall, used as a residence hall until May 2008, was built in 1966.
Construction of the Nursing and Allied Health Building is part of the plan for Gordon College to begin offering a bachelor of science in nursing degree in 2010.
