Gordon College Theatre to Kick Off Season With 5 Witty Comedies

Sep 10, 2008 - 9:42:45 AM

Brandon Small, Jessy Whitley and Alex Friddell are featured in "Words, Words, Words"

The Gordon College Theatre will kick off its 2008--09 season Sept. 24 with the "All In The Timing," five one--act comedies by David Ives.

This critically acclaimed, award-winning evening of comedies combines wit, intellect, satire and just plain fun.

"Sure Thing" is a classic of contemporary comedy: Two people meet in a cafe and find their way through a conversational minefield as an offstage bell interrupts their false starts, gaffes, and faux pas on the way to falling in love.

"Words, Words Words" recalls the philosophical adage that three monkeys typing into infinity will sooner or later produce Hamlet and asks: What would monkeys talk about at their typewriters?

"Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread" is a musical vignette in trademark Glassian style, with the celebrated composer having a moment of existential crisis in a bakery.

"The Philadelphia" presents a young man in a restaurant who has fallen into "a Philadelphia," a Twilight Zone--like state in which he cannot get anything he asks for. His only way out of the dilemma is to ask for the opposite of what he wants.

"Variations on the Death of Trotsky" shows the Russian revolutionary on the day of his demise, desperately trying to cope with the mountain--climber's axe he's discovered in his head.

The plays feature Jaye Bell, Kaprisha Ballard, Paolo Faraon, Alex Friddell, Andrew Huckaby, William Hurst, Will Lewis, Justin Ridgeway, Brandon Small, Jenna Snidemiller, Chris Steele, Kimberly VanBrackle, D.J. Walker, Channing Wesley, Jenna Boatwright and Jessica Whitley.

This is the first presentation by Rhonda Wooley, Gordon College's new theatre instructor. Joining her in the production is Tony Pearson, assistant professor of theatre.

"All In The Timing" is Sept. 24-27 at 7:30 p.m. with the Sunday, Sept. 28 show at 2 p.m. Free admission for Gordon students, staff and faculty. General admission is $7; those over 65, $6; $5 for students and $4 each for groups of 10 or more.
