Upson-Lee Students Get a Taste of College Life

Jun 4, 2008 - 4:33:12 PM

Forty-five 10th graders from Upson Lee High School are getting a taste of college life as participants in Upward Bound, a program offered through Atlanta Metropolitan College and hosted by Gordon College.

Upward Bound's goal is to increase the rate at which students complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college.

For six weeks the students receive instruction in reading, writing, study skills and other topics relating to college life. They also live in dorms, as any resident college student would.

Gordon College President Lawrence Weill looks on as Upson-Lee High School students who are participating in Upward Bound perform an experiment in a chemistry lab. The students are, from left, Tichina Tigner, Takara Alford, Jasmin Andrews. Back row, from left, Jalen Hammond, Demarcus McDowell and Dennis Diggs.

"I am so excited to be participating," said Tichina Tigner. "I think Upward Bound will help me be more successful through my next years of high school which will help me be more prepared for college and life."

Her fellow participant, Jasmin Andrews, agrees.

"I am learning how to take notes better in class, how to study better and how to be more prepared for my classes," Andrews said. "I can use these skills in high school and perfect them by the time I get to college. I want to go to college and I want to be successful."

The program coordinator is Camille Ziegler.

"We are so happy to be here at Gordon College," Ziegler said. "The campus is so beautiful and is perfect for the students who are so excited to be here and experiencing college life."
