A group of rising juniors from Upson-Lee High School in Thomaston are spending a month at Gordon as part of Upward Bound, a high school success and college preparatory program offered by Atlanta Metropolitian College.

The purpose of Upward Bound is to provide support to students who are in their last two years of high school in preparation for entering college.

During the four-week program the students will receive instruction in mathematics, science, composition, literature and foreign languages. They also have a variety of elective courses to choose form.

Some of the Upward Bound participants include, front, from left, Ee-shee Sullivan, Ricondra Raines. Back row, from left, Sabrina Zellner, Tichina Tigner, Marvette Wilkerson, Jasmine Andrews, Dimonds Davidson, Paulisha Walker, Bria Davis, Shawntay Smith, a Gordon student who is assisting with the program; Ariel Johnson.

Tutoring, counseling, mentoring and cultural enrichment are also offered and the students live on campus much like they would as actual college students.

"These are classes that we will be taking in high school next year," said Tichina Tigner, 16. "I want to go to college, so this is helping me know what I need to do in high school to get to college and a little bit of what college will be like. We are working hard but having fun too."

The group is also preparing for the Upward Bound Olympics set for July 8 at Atlanta Metropolitan College where they will compete against other Upward Bound program participants.
