May 2, 2008 - 2:35:05 PM

The Lamar County Democratic Party recently made a contribution to the Dewaine T. Bell Scholarship for Music or Education at Gordon College.

The check was presented to Gordon President Lawrence Weill by Democratic Party Chairman and Lamar County Commission member Bennie Horton Jr. and Beverly Eskridge, the party's treasurer.

Beverly Eskridge and Bennie Horton Jr. present a check to Gordon President Lawrence Weill for the Dewaine T. Bell Scholarship for Music or Education.

"The Democratic Party is honored to contribute to the scholarship established in Dewaine's name at Gordon College," said Horton. "We hope other organizations will help keep Dewaine's legacy alive by supporting this college scholarship."

Once the scholarship is fully endowed, it will be awarded to a graduate of the Lamar County School System that plans to major in either music or education at Gordon College.

Bell, who was Mayor of Barnesville and a retired school administrator, died last fall.

His widow, Brenda, and daughter, Christal, signed a gift agreement in March establishing the scholarship at Gordon College.

"We appreciate the gift to the scholarship fund," said Weill. "Dewaine was a tremendous supporter of education and a great friend of Gordon College."
