The quality of the educational experience should be the main reason for choosing Gordon College, but we realize that expenses may also be a major consideration for you and your family. The Gordon College Foundation is committed to providing as many resources as possible to assist you in earning a high quality education.

Through generous donations from Gordon College alumni and supporters, the Gordon College Foundation has scholarships ranging from $200 to $2,000 annually.

Academic Scholarships – General

The following scholarships are based on academic performance and do not require that need be considered in their awarding. Some of these scholarships are given in a single one-time gift and others are given for one year (fall and spring semesters). Others are renewable, which means that if a student maintains good academic standing, they are eligible for funding through the scholarship for as long as the student is enrolled at Gordon as a full-time student. Students may receive funding from a renewable scholarship for as many as four consecutive years.

Lewis A. & Manona B. Akins Scholarship

Established in 1984 with a gift from the Akins family. Mr. and Mrs. L. Lamar Akins, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ralph Akins, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Akins, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Akins, and Miss Mary Sue Akins initially established the scholarship to honor their parents. Bruce Akins, grandson of Lewis and Manona, has also contributed to the scholarship. When thanked for the establishment of the award the Akins family was referenced as an “extraordinary family.”

James C. Banks, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1990 by Mr. Neil H. Hightower, then president and CEO of Thomaston Mills. Mr. Banks was an outstanding citizen and a trusted community leader in both Upson and Lamar Counties. He began his educational career in 1975 at Monroe Worthy Schools as a math teacher. Monroe Worthy was named for his uncle. In the early 1970s he became an assistant principal at Worthy Junior High, then principal in 1975. The school later became known as Upson Middle School. He was widely known for his leadership and his fairness to all students and teachers. He retired in 1987 and was survived by his wife Mary W. Banks, a retired teacher from the Lamar County public school system. He taught courses at Gordon College and served in an advisory capacity in personnel matters for Thomaston Mills. He was founder of an organization called “Men of Action.” This group was dedicated to the development and guidance of troubled youth. Mr. Bank’s concern and sincere interest in the youth of the community was well-respected. The organization he founded remains active. Mr. Banks also was supportive of the Boy Scouts in Lamar and Upson Counties. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the St. Mary AME Church, having served in many capacities from Sunday School teacher to Financial Secretary.

Miss Marion Bush Scholarship

Established in 1996 with a gift from Charles H. Jones, an alumnus of Gordon College, former member of the University System Board of Regents, and Macon businessman. Miss Marion Bush was a well-loved professor at Gordon College. Few who encountered her have ever forgotten her and many of her students some 50 years later can still quote the rules of grammar she instilled in them. After Gordon Military College was purchased by the state of Georgia and became Gordon College, Miss Marion remained a faithful supporter and served on the board of trustees of the Foundation. Her legacy to Gordon, both during its military days and its years as a unit of the university system is significant.

James W. Butler Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1997 by family and friends of Mr. Butler. Mr. Butler was a trustee of Gordon Military College and one of the organizers of Lamar State Bank which became United Bank. He was a Chevron Oil agent and wholesale distributor and a lifetime deacon of the First Baptist Church of Barnesville. For 45 years he was a soloist in the adult choir of the church. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Al Sihah Shrine Club of Macon.

Mr. & Mrs. W. C. Byrd General Scholarship

Established in 1993 by Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Byrd of Thomaston. Mr. Byrd is a businessman with an interest in education.

Joel & Sara Edwards Scholarship

Established in 1993 by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Edwards and Mr. and Mrs. J. Joel Edwards to honor their parents.

Rosemary K. Evans Scholarship

Established in 1998 with a gift from Joseph Evans to honor his mother. Rosemary Evans was a librarian in Gordon’s Hightower Library and according to her son, “Mother’s time at Gordon was very enjoyable and rewarding to her.”

Gordon Alumni Scholarship

Established in 2007 with gifts from several endowment funds originally established by alumni and friends of the College. Among those endowments contributing to the establishment of this award are the Class of 1939 Scholarship fund, the Class of 1940 Scholarship fund, the Frank Jolly Scholarship fund, and the Marvin Pierce Owen Memorial Fund.

Thomas & May Hall Griffin Scholarship

Established in 1989 with a gift from M.H. Griffin and Eva Gentry Griffin. Dr. Mack Griffin attended Gordon Military Institute from 1919-1922. He was a native of Coffee County, Georgia. While at Gordon he participated in the school’s military program, serving as a member of the corps of cadets. He also studied music with one of the school’s most beloved teachers, Miss Marion Bush. His senior year he was named an outstanding officer in the cadet corps. He was also an honor student in the school’s college preparatory program. He earned a bachelor’s degree from UGA. He received his master’s degree in 1926 and his doctorate in 1928 both from the University of North Carolina. He joined the department of foreign languages and literature at Oklahoma State University in 1933. He retired in 1968 from OSU with 35 years of service. Dr. Griffin died August 20, 1990, followed by his wife in March 1993.

George & Dorothy Hightower Scholarship

Established with gifts from the Hightower family and friends. George Hightower was a staunch supporter of Gordon College. He served as president of the Gordon College Foundation. The Hightower Library is named in honor of Dorothy and her portrait hangs in the lobby area. Their philanthropic gifts touched the lives of many people in the middle Georgia area.

Thomas E. Johnson Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1989 by Mrs. Martha Johnson Jones in memory of her late husband.

W. L. “Luther” Jones Scholarship

Established in 1997 by Charles H. Jones in memory of his uncle. The family believes that W. L. “Luther” Jones attended Gordon between 1922 and 1923 and was among one of the first “nontraditional” students. At the time he was married with two children and owned a farm. However, he left home and boarded at Gordon, going home in the summer to care for his crops. After two years at Gordon he received his teaching degree and taught school in both Upson and Pike Counties until he was elected Ordinary of Pike County. He served in this capacity for more than 20 years and retired from the post.

Shi Gray & Martha Kendrick Holmes Scholarship

Established in 1999 through a bequest from Mr. Holmes. Shi Gray Holmes moved to Pike County in 1940 to farm. He became well-loved by the people of the area who considered him as Pike County’s “unofficial historian.” He was elected Pike County Clerk of Superior Court in 1966 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1987. He was a longtime supporter of the College. When the state acquired Gordon in 1972 he became a charter member of the Foundation. Prior to that time he had served as a trustee for Gordon Military College.

The Lambdin Scholarship

Established in 1998 by Charles E. (Charley) Lambdin, III (1926-1999) and his wife, Mary Ann Lambdin. The scholarship was originally established in memory of Charles Edwin Lambdin (1903-1977) father of Charley, who was the son of William Wallace Lambdin, son of Gordon College’s founder, Charles Edwin Lambdin (1839-1888).  Charles Edwin Lambdin (1903-1977) graduated from Gordon Institute in 1919 and from the Atlanta Law School in 1933. He worked for Chevrolet until 1944, and then for a number of companies as an auditor until his retirement. He was very active in the Methodist Church, the Kiwanis, and in both the YMCA and United Way. When Charley died in 1999, Mary increased the endowment to honor both Charley and his father. Charley was a veteran of WWII and he was severely wounded during his service. He majored in chemistry in college and spent most of his career as an analytical chemist. The Lambdin name is widely known at Gordon College. The founder and first president of the college was Charles Edwin Lambdin (1839-1888) and the administration building, named Lambdin Hall, is the oldest building on campus. It was Charles E. Lambdin (1839-1888) who gave the name Gordon to the college. Both Lambdin men for whom this scholarship was established are descendants of the College’s founder.

Robert & Caroline Lombardo Scholarship

Established in 1993 by a bequest from Robert and Caroline. Mrs. Lombardo was a New York school teacher for more than 40 years and it was her desire to aid in the education of deserving students. This award may be divided by two or more recipients.

W. Pierce May, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1992 by the wife and children of Mr. Pierce May, Jr. Mr. May retired from Southern Bell in 1982. He was very active in the Barnesville community. He was a member of the local Rotary Club for more than 30 years. He served as president of the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce and the Barnesville Lamar County Civic League. He was chairman of the Barnesville Zoning Commission and for more than 49 years he was a member of the Grant Park Masonic Lodge. Both of his daughters graduated from Gordon Military High School.

Diane Bentley Perdue Scholarship

Established in 1993 by friends in her memory. Mrs. Perdue was an artist and a native of Upson County who died after a long battle with cancer.

Judge Robert L. Russell Scholarship

Established in 1997 with a gift from the Richard B. Russell Foundation, Inc. This scholarship is named for Judge Russell, brother of the late Senator Richard B. Russell. Among Gordon’s distinguished alumni, he attended school here from 1917 until 1918. Preference for this award is to a student from Barrow County.

Richard B. Russell Scholarship

Established in 1997 with a gift from the Richard B. Russell Foundation. One of the most distinguished alumni of Gordon College is the late Senator Richard B. Russell for whom this scholarship is named. He attended Gordon from 1913 to 1915. His place in history is well-documented and Russell Hall, a campus academic building, also bears his name. Preference for this award is given to a student from Barrow County.

Established in 1984 with a gift from the Wisebram family. Elijah Wisebram was a longtime merchant in Barnesville.

The following scholarships are also based on academic performance, but are only awarded to students residing in a specific area. Some of these scholarships cite that place of residence as a preference, but if no applicant is available from that area, others may be considered for the award.

R. Wright & Dovie Bryant Watkins and Elizabeth Hood Watkins Scholarship (Butts County)

Established in 1996 with a gift from Richard W. Watkins, Jr. This scholarship was established to honor Mr. Watkin’s parents: R. Wright and Dovie Bryant Watkins. He also wished to honor his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabeth Hood Watkins worked for Central Georgia Electric Membership Cooperative from 1947 until her retirement in 1985. She was president of the Sylvan Grove Hospital Auxiliary for ten years and raised thousands of dollars to purchase medical equipment. When the hospital faced a possible closure she marshaled forces and saved the hospital. She also grew prize-winning roses and received national recognition for her work with the EMC membership services.

Crawford County Educator's Scholarship (Crawford County)

This scholarship was formed in 2007 by merging several endowments. These endowments honored several residents of Crawford County including Mrs. J. B. Hawkins. Mrs. Hawkins was a graduate of Berry College who married another Berry alumnus, J. B. Hawkins. She taught English at Bowdin High School from 1949 until 1955 when she and her family moved to Roberta. She taught 6th and 7th grade until her retirement in 1976. Her husband was a long-time basketball coach in Crawford County and they worked with community youth groups during their years residing in Crawford County. The J. F. Lowery endowment is also part of this scholarship fund. J. F. Lowery retired as a teacher in Crawford County and the original endowment in his honor was established in 1991. The R. L. Sheets endowment fund also contributed to this scholarship. Mr. Sheets came to Crawford County in 1949 after working briefly in Troup County as principal of Center High School. In Crawford County he served as principal of Crawford County High School for 17 years and Superintendent of Schools for 11 years. He also served as a member of the Gordon College Foundation.

Established in 2003 by Otha Dent, a trustee of the Gordon College Foundation, to honor his mother and father. The recipient must be a student from Crawford County.

Established in 1990 by the First National Bank.

Barnesville Women's League Scholarship (Lamar County)

Established in 1992. Preferred recipient is a graduating female student from Lamar County Comprehensive High School who meets the academic standards of the College. If a female student does not apply or there is no applicant meeting the standards it may be awarded to a male student meeting the same requirements.

Clark-Tidwell Scholarship (Meriwether County)

Established in 1986 with a gift from Miss Lucy Clark of Gay, Georgia. Miss Clark was the oldest niece of Julius C. Tidwell. She donated several old photographs and books to the Hightower Library alumni collection. Among them was the 1915 yearbook belonging to the late Mr. Julius Tidwell. Miss Lucy’s brother, William James Clark, II was also a graduate of Gordon, as were other relatives: Louis Clark, George Clark and Lizetta Clark. Her brother, Harvey James Tidwell, attended Gordon. The scholarship is named for the two families who were connected to the College. The recipient of the scholarship is preferably a student from Meriwether County with a record of academic achievement and extra-curricular participation.

Established in 1989 by a gift from the F & M Bank and Trust in memory of four-year-old Tripp Griffin, killed in an accident in 1993.

John Thomas Parham & Frank Spencer Scholarship (Meriwether County)

Established in 1984. Preference given to minority students, 4-H students, and students with majors in pre-agriculture or ag-related majors.

Kelli Hammond Memorial/Pike County Kiwanis Scholarship (Pike County)

Established in 1999 by the Pike County Kiwanis Club in memory of Kelli Hammond, a club member and local businesswoman.

Red Edwards/Pike County Kiwanis Scholarship (Pike County)

Established in 2001 by the Pike County Kiwanis Club. Edwin Fuller “Red” Edwards, Sr. was born in Culloden, Georgia, in 1904. He grew up in Yatesville and attended Young Harris College for two years of high school and two years of college. He graduated from Auburn University, paying for his tuition by selling Bibles in rural Alabama. “Red” and his wife, Charlotte Robertson Edwards of Concord, Georgia, lived in Atlanta more than 50 years. With two partners his businesses were Kinnett Edwards Boyd and The London Agency. Together they were the largest fire, casualty and specialty general agencies in the county. Mr. Edwards retired in 1975, and he and Charlotte moved to Zebulon. He was mayor from 1981 to 1986. He was former president of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, charter and life member of the Pike County Kiwanis, a director of United Bank-Pike, an avid gardener, and a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Edwards was 99 years old when he lost his battle with skin cancer.

Lindsey Daniel Memorial Scholarship (Upson County)

Established in 2000 by friends and family of Lindsey Daniel. Lindsey was seventeen years old and a student at Gordon and a senior at Upson-Lee High School when she was killed in a car accident in the spring of 1999.

Jack Fordham Scholarship (Upson County)

Established in 1986 by a gift from Mrs. Jack Fordham. Recipients should have a strong academic record and proof of participation in extra-curricular activities. Potential for success in college endeavors should influence selection.

Mike Kelly Scholarship (Upson County)

Established in 1992 by family and friends of the Kelly family. The scholarship is in memory of Michael Danny Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Kelly. The 19-year-old Thomaston resident died from injuries in an automobile accident that occurred when he was en route to classes at Gordon College. He was enrolled as a freshman. In 1991, he was named “Mr. Upson High School.”

Employment-Related Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded to the children and grandchildren of employees of certain companies. These scholarships request first preference for an employee relative, but some allow an award if no relative is eligible.

Ben Blue 3rd District DOT Scholarship

Established in 1996 by Dr. and Mrs. Warren Patrick of Thomaston to honor their cousin, Ben Blue, who had a long and distinguished service with the Department of Transportation. This award is given to an employee or relative of an employee of the DOT Regional Office in Thomaston. In the event there is no qualified applicant the Foundation may award the scholarship to a non-employee relative.

Brad Edwards Memorial Scholarship (United Bank)

Established in 1991 by Mr. and Mrs. J. Joseph Edwards in memory of their son, Brad. The recipient is preferably a relative of a United Bank employee and is not based on a high grade point average, but on the applicant’s desire for a college education, leadership skills, and concern for his fellowman.

J. Joel Edwards Scholarship (United Bank)

Established in 1986 by Mr. Bill Edwards, a trustee of the Gordon College Foundation. Preference is given to relatives of United Bank employees.

Vernon & Gaynelle Grizzard Scholarship (Southeastern Mills)

Established in 1993 with a gift from Robert U. Grizzard of Southeastern Mills. Recipient must be an employee, child, or grandchild of an employee of Southeastern Mills and should reside in Lamar County.

Keadle Family Scholarship (Keadle Lumber)

Established in 1988 by the owners of Keadle Lumber Company. The recipient is to be an employee or relative of an employee.

Lamar County Sheriff's Office Scholarship (Lamar law enforcement employee or major)

Established in 1998 with a gift from the Lamar County Sheriff’s office from seized and forfeited drug funds. This endowment may only be used for the training and further education of law enforcement officers. Preference is first given to any Lamar County Sheriff’s Department employee, secondly to a law enforcement officer working for any law enforcement agency in Lamar County, and thirdly to any law enforcement officer who resides in Lamar County but works for an agency outside the county.

Established in 1984 with a gift from the institute. Preference is given to employees and family members of employees of the Roosevelt Institute.

Athletic Scholarships

The following scholarships are awarded to athletes who were active in their high school sports program.

Joe H. Brown, Sr. Memorial Scholarship (Butts County)

Established in 1997 with a gift from Mr. Charlie Brown, Jr. of Jackson. Recipient must be a graduate of Jackson High School and have participated in athletics while in high school.

Chad Colquitt Memorial Scholarship (Upson County)

Established in 1995 to honor the memory of Chad Colquitt, a Gordon student killed in an automobile accident. He was a high school athlete from Thomaston.

In most cases, these scholarships are given to business majors, unless otherwise noted and some are based on place of residence.

Patricia L. Bell Scholarship (Upson or Pike County, Music or Insurance)

Established in 2003 with first consideration given to students residing in Pike or Upson Counties who desire a career in music or insurance.

Established in 2000 with a gift from the estate of Margaret E. Edwards.

Charlie B. Jenkins Business Scholarship

Established in 1992 by the children of Charlie B. Jenkins. Affectionately known as “Mr. Charlie.” Jenkins was a strong supporter and advocate of education. He was a faithful contributor to the Gordon College Foundation. He had a 44-year career in banking with the C & S Bank of Thomaston. He was the bank’s president for 24 years. From 1945 to 1972 he served on the Upson County Board of Education and during that time he held the office of chairman and of vice-chairman. He was a charter member of the Thomaston Lions Club and he helped to form the club in 1940. He held membership in the club for 52 years. He was also one of the founders of the Thomaston-Upson County Chamber of Commerce. He was actively involved in the Upson County Industrial Bureau, Georgia Farm Sales. Corp., and the former Upson County Education and Recreation, Inc. (now known as the Recreation Commission).

West Central Georgia Bank/Jesse E. Rogers, Sr. Scholarship (Upson)

Established in 1995 by a gift from West Central Georgia Bank. Jesse E. Rogers, Sr. was the charter founder of the bank in 1974, and served as Chairman of the Board.

David Edgar Sellers, Jr. Memorial Scholarship (Lamar County)

Established in 2004 to honor the late David Edgar Sellers, Jr., a longtime professor at Gordon. The scholarship was established by Mrs. Elizabeth Sellers and her sons, David and Walter. The recipient should be a student majoring in science, English, psychology, or education.

Elaine Brown Music Scholarship (Music, Upson County)

Luis and Marta Guinot Scholarship (Fluent Spanish-speaking female)

Established in 2005, by Luis and Marta Guinot. The Guinots are interested in retaining the international flavor of the Gordon Campus and their scholarship is available to female students of Hispanic descent who are fluent in Spanish. Luis Guinot attended Gordon Military High School as a boarding cadet from San Juan, Puerto Rico. He later practiced law in Washington, DC and served as the United States’ ambassador to Costa Rica during the administration of George Bush, Sr. In 2005, he brought the International Lecture series to the Gordon campus.

Mary Jean Ivey Simmons Fine Arts Scholarship (Piano, Voice, or Visual Arts)

Established in 1993 by Dr. and Mrs. Al Simmons. This scholarship honors the parents of Mary Jean Ivey Simmons, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Ivey, as well as Mary Jean, who was a longtime employee of Gordon College and former Foundation trustee. First preference for this award is to a promising piano major, with second preference to a voice major, and lastly to a promising visual arts major.

David Edgar Sellers, Jr. Memorial Scholarship (Lamar County)

Established in 2004 to honor the late David Edgar Sellers, Jr., a longtime professor at Gordon. The scholarship was established by Mrs. Elizabeth Sellers and her sons, David and Walter. The recipient should be a student majoring in science, English, psychology, or education.

Nursing Scholarships

These scholarships are restricted to students who have been accepted into Gordon’s nursing program.

Daisy Bush Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1988 by Drs. James Elsey, W.M. Dallas, and W.M. Oxford, all of Thomaston. Mrs. Daisy Bush was born Daisy Burnette in Lamar County. She and her husband, Percy S. Bush, were graduates of Gordon Institute in 1928. It is of interest that Mrs. Burnette, the mother of Mrs. Bush, was required to earn a living for her large family of seven children more or less single-handedly because of the early death of her husband (Arthur Burnette died in 1918). Her initial venture into the business world was in partnership with the then-professor L. D. Watson of Gordon College who jointly owned and operated a dairy which for many years supplied the school. Miss Daisy and Mr. Perry had one child, a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Bush Carter of Atlanta. Miss Daisy worked as a nurse in the office of Dr. Dallas, Dr. Oxford, and Dr. Elsey for 25 years.

Evelyn G. Bush Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1987 with a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Johnny T. Deen and the Barnesville Eye Clinic. This gift was established to honor Mrs. J.E. Bush and is restricted to a nursing major from Upson, Lamar, or Pike Counties.

Mr. & Mrs. W. C. Byrd Nursing Scholarship

Established by Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Byrd of Thomaston in 1991. Mr. Byrd is a businessman with an interest in education. The recipient is to be an outstanding student pursuing a degree in nursing.

Established by Alan Connell of Thomaston in 2007 to honor the memory of his parents. Alan Connell is a trustee of the Gordon College Foundation.

Dr. John B. Crawford Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1990 by friends of Dr. Crawford to honor him and his long years of service to the Barnesville community. Dr. Crawford was a longtime general practitioner of medicine in Lamar County. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees in the last two years of Gordon Military College’s history and was a member of the Gordon College Foundation.

Laura Joy Ellis Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1989 with a gift from P.R.N. Pool of Griffin. The scholarship was established in memory of the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Monty Ellis. Laura Joy was born on December 19, 1988, and died January 1, 1989. Recipients must be a Georgia resident.

Doris K. & S. Wayne Hempstead Scholarship

Established in 1976 with a gift from Mrs. Doris K. Hempstead. Mrs. Hempstead was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Thomaston in 1929 with her husband, S. Wayne Hempstead, who was general manager for the B. F. Goodrich Company at Martha Mills. Mrs. Hempstead was active in civic affairs and helped start the lunchroom program at R. E. Lee Grammar School. She helped establish the Girl Scout program in Upson County. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Tumlin Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women. She was an alumni member of the Home Economics Honor Society, Phi Upsilon Omicron and a member of the John Houston Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Hempstead died February 3, 1996.

Jennifer A. Kressaty Scholarship

Established in 2002 by Terry Betkowski, a Gordon faculty member, in memory of her niece. Jennifer Adrienne Kressaty was born April 21, 1973, in Teaneck, New Jersey. She was a 1995 graduate of Seton Hall University where she served as the yearbook photo editor and the varsity sports photographer. She died suddenly from a congenital heart ailment in 1997. At that time she was a Coca-Cola food service account representative for Yale University.

Established in 1999 by Dr. Alexander Pollack in memory of his wife. Virginia Pollack was a graduate of the Gordon nursing program.

Rebecca Yates Riley Scholarship

Established in 1994 by the Dundee Community Association, Inc. and Dundee Mills, Inc. This scholarship was established in memory of Gordon College nursing instructor, Mrs. Becky Riley. She died in an automobile accident in 1994. Her father, M. J. Yates, was vice president of Greige Manufacturing at Dundee Mills. Mrs. Riley was born in Spalding County and graduated from Griffin High School in 1972. She received an Associate of Science in Nursing from Clayton State College in 1975 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia State in 1978. She was enrolled in the master’s program at Georgia State at the time of her death. She had worked as a staff nurse since 1975 and began her career at South Fulton Medical Center. She joined the Gordon College nursing faculty in 1993 and was also employed as a registered nurse at Henry General Hospital. She was a resident of Jonesboro.

Lorene Turner Smoot Scholarship (Upson)

Established in 1999 with a gift from Jack Smoot. Lorene was not a nurse, but she worked in and around the nursing profession all of her life. She worked as a social worker and in the medical records department of Thomaston’s Bolingreen Nursing Home in the 1970s. She served as a social worker at Meriwether Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home for four years. Returning to Thomaston in 1984, she was employed by Care More, Inc., Riverside Nursing Home, where she was employed as a medical records technician until her death in 1998.

Florence B. Thomas Scholarship

Established in 1997 with a bequest from the estate of Florence B. Thomas. Florence Thomas was a nurse in the United States Army. She was often called a “woman ahead of her time” and those who knew her well called her a “self-made gal who was a lot of fun.” She graduated from high school in 1935 and completed her nursing training by 1939. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she joined the Army saying it was the best way she could serve her country. Serve, she did. She treated combat injuries in World War II and later her work in the Army took her around the world. She served as an operating room supervisor in Thailand where she reported that young recruits sometime had difficulty in deciding whether to respond to her as “yes ma’am” or “yes sir.” She died in December, 1994, at the age of 83.

Rebecca Britt Brown Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1990 with a gift from Dr. Benjamin Brown of Thomaston. The gift is in memory of Dr. Brown’s mother who graduated from Gordon Military College in 1938. The recipient must reside in Central Georgia and desire to pursue a degree in medicine, pharmacy or science.

A student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application as soon as possible in order to be considered for these scholarships. Chafin Smith Study Abroad Scholarship

Established in 2004 by Mrs. Claudette Smith in memory of her husband. This award is given annually to one or more students participating in a Gordon College study abroad experience. Students should watch for emails and bulletin board notices for information on where to find the application and the application deadlines, which vary from year to year. Applications are typically due in December and are announced in January. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were avid travelers throughout their married life. Mrs. Smith says that she and Chafin had breakfast in Paris, lunch over the Atlantic, and dinner back in the states. She credits her travels with giving her a different view of the world and counts her friends in many continents.

The award deadlines are announced on campus through email alerts and bulletin board notices and do not follow the foundation deadlines as described in the Foundation scholarship application, printed scholarship materials, or this Web site.
