ADVISING IN THE DIVISION OF BUSINESS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE
The Division of Business and Social Science provides advisement to students who have completed their learning support requirements and have declared a major in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, History, Information Systems, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, or Sociology. New students—either freshmen or transfer—are normally advised for their first semester at Gordon College in the Group Advisement and Registration sessions of New Student Orientation. New students in their first semester as well as continuing students newly declaring a major in one of the division’s disciplines will be assigned an advisor shortly after the start of the semester. During the first half of the semester, the student should meet with his or her advisor to discuss a plan of study for completion of the associates degree. In subsequent semesters, students should meet with their advisors to discuss any changes in their planned curriculum as well as plans for baccalaureate studies. No student can be unlocked to register for classes without an initial planning meeting with an advisor. Advisors’ office hours, email addresses, and phone numbers can be obtained from the division office (678. 359. 5194). Where advisors office hours conflict with students’ class or work schedules, advisors will make a reasonable effort to schedule appointment times more convenient for the student. To maximize availability of classes, however, students should meet with their advisors as early as possible. Prior to initially meeting with an advisor, students are expected to explore the material available on the major advising page and to print out and carefully review an advisement worksheet. After meeting with their advisors, students should be sure to save their worksheet for planning future semesters.
