ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

The English as a Second Language Program at Gordon College provides instruction in, vocabulary, grammar, reading and composition for non-native speakers of English from the intermediate to the advanced level. The program is designed to prepare students in the language skills necessary for successful academic work.

Admission

To be admitted to the ESL program at Gordon College, students must first apply and be admitted to Gordon College. At Gordon, students are able to take some academic courses along with their ESL courses. These academic courses include classes in art, music, theatre, math, science, physical education, and business among others. Courses

Gordon College offers a variety of courses to help improve skills in reading/vocabulary and grammar/writing. Please check the current list of courses offered for information concerning the times these courses are offered.

Placement and Testing

All entering non-native speakers of English without transferable English credit (English 1101) and scores below SAT I 480 or ACT 21 (enhanced) will be required to take the ESL Placement Test. All entering students without transferable math credit (Math 1101 or higher) are required to take the math portion of the Computer Adaptive Assessment and Support System (COMPASS). These placement tests are very important as they will determine at which level you begin your classes. Students are not allowed to take the test more than once.
