Gordon College

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION COURSE LISTINGS AND INFORMATION

The B.S. in Education program includes upper division level courses in education, mathematics, science, and humanities. Gordon College students are required to complete 137 semester credit hours to earn a B.S. degree in education - 64 hours of freshman/sophomore-level core courses plus 73 hours of junior/senior-level courses. The upper division courses can be completed with full-time enrollment in two years with one required summer session. Students are required to complete general education core courses in Areas A through E plus the appropriate education program in Area F prior to admission to the B.S. in Education program. Students may take upper division level courses after being admitted to the baccalaureate program.

The Teacher Education Division also has information about the Associate of Arts in Education and Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education available on the Gordon College website:  http://www.gdn.edu/programs/TE/

Currently candidates are admitted only for full-time study. Over a two-year period, teacher candidates are required to complete a minimum of 900 hours of clinical field experience including student teaching in a variety of school settings/placements. In three of the five continuous semesters of study, the course Professionalism: Field Experience is scheduled.  Clinical field experience in area schools is coordinated with the courses of study in those semesters. In the description of courses below, courses are taught in the afternoon.  This leaves mornings available, and this is the best time to participate in school-based learning. Therefore, candidates will be required to verify that they are available for clinical experiences during the regular public school day.

Additional emphasis is also given to a progression of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that successful teachers must develop.  Field Experience I emphasizes Math and Reading; Field Experience II emphasizes special education, and Field Experience III concludes with integration of various curricular areas, learning design, assessment, utilization of technology, and effective pedagogy.   In the final semester of study, all candidates must complete the internship of student teaching, which is available only on a full-time basis.  This represents 15 weeks of full-time teaching in an area elementary school.

As a cohort program, teacher candidates will participate in all coursework as a group.  Some individual preferences will be accommodated regarding candidate interests in the wide range of teaching and age grouping represented by elementary education.  However, as a dual certification in Early Childhood Education and General Special Education, candidates will be highly qualified to teach at any grade (Pre-K – 5), any subject in the curriculum, and with any group of regular education students including those special education students who are mainstreamed into the general education program.  Therefore, candidates are expected to develop and demonstrate a versatile array of proficiencies.
